Domestic and international adoption finds homes for only a small number of the abandoned children living in Chinese orphanages, (known as Social Welfare Institutes, or "SWIs"). Once a child has reached the age of about 7 years old, his or her chances of ever being adopted are even further reduced. While a few are placed with foster families, most the of the older children in SWIs, many of them with special needs, reside in the orphanages grouped with similar aged boys and girls until they are expected to leave when they reach the age of 17 or 18 years old.
There are a number of charity efforts directed toward the needs of infants and younger children in Chinese SWIs, but the older children, also in much need of assistance, sometimes seem "overlooked". The LOOK Project is intended to send love and care to these children.
